China has achieved phased results in the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, and various industries are gradually resuming work and production. However, the task of epidemic prevention and control remains arduous, facing new situations and difficulties. To help the public continue to ensure food safety during this special period while resuming production and life, and to support epidemic prevention and control, the Food Department of the National Health Commission specially organized experts to study and propose the "Six Dos and Six Don'ts" dietary recommendations.

Wash hands frequently; do not eat without washing hands.

During the epidemic prevention and control period, washing hands is as important a personal protective measure as wearing masks. Frequent handwashing is also an important measure to ensure food safety. Hands should be washed frequently with running water, soap, or hand sanitizer, especially after going out shopping or receiving takeout, and particularly between handling raw and cooked foods and afterwards. Hands must be washed before meals.

Separate raw and cooked foods; cook thoroughly; eat less raw and cold foods.

Separating raw and cooked foods and cooking thoroughly are the most important measures to prevent foodborne diseases, especially key to preventing collective food poisoning in school, enterprise, and elderly care institution canteens.

Cutting boards, knives, bowls, plates, and other utensils used for processing and holding raw meat, aquatic products, and vegetables should be kept separate from those used for cooked foods, and must be cleaned and disinfected promptly after use. During epidemic prevention and control, try to eat less or avoid cold dishes and raw aquatic products. Purchased bulk foods such as marinated meats and leftovers should be thoroughly heated before eating. After resuming work and production, some people may choose to bring meals from home, which must be thoroughly heated before consumption.

Do not contact live livestock and poultry; manage companion animals properly.

Wild and domestic livestock and poultry may carry zoonotic pathogens; avoid contact with live animals as much as possible and do not slaughter animals yourself. When purchasing fresh livestock and poultry products, it is recommended to choose chilled or frozen products. In addition, companion animals should be prevented from entering kitchens and food storage areas.

Do not hoard food; prevent food spoilage and deterioration.

Currently, the market supply of various daily necessities such as rice, flour, grains, oil, fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and milk is sufficient and stable, so there is no need for large-scale hoarding. If personal needs require, it is appropriate to store pre-packaged convenience foods, canned foods, frozen foods, frozen meats, etc., suitable for long-term storage. Additionally, as the weather warms and the southern regions enter the rainy season, it is recommended to store food in cool, ventilated places and check regularly to prevent insects, moisture, and mold.

When dining out, share dishes separately and avoid group dining.

Dining out is a way to adjust taste and also a practical action to support the resumption of the catering industry. However, it is recommended to minimize group dining; if dining in groups, control the number of people, keep seats at a certain distance, and use serving chopsticks to share dishes. In office environments, canteens, and similar settings, avoid gathering for meals.

Maintain a balanced diet and moderate exercise; do not blindly take supplements.

A healthy body is the foundation for resisting disease. Maintain regular routines and a balanced diet, but do not blindly take supplements. Ensure sufficient sleep and engage in indoor equipment-free exercise; if exercising outdoors, maintain social distancing. Do not believe claims that certain foods can prevent the novel coronavirus. Follow the "Chinese Dietary Guidelines" recommendations while ensuring adequate intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, and high-quality proteins.
